THE ARGENTINE
TANGO
appeared in the suburbs of Buenos
Aires at the end of the 19th Century in the middle of an
environment where the city was transforming into an immense metropolis
caused by immigration and progress. Along with the black inhabitants and
the gauchos, the mix of immigrants that then arrived in Buenos Aires
remained without work in the army, made the tango a cultural product
unique in the world capturing as it did all the characteristics of the
inhabitants of Buenos Aires.
In the beginning, the songs were only
instrumental, performed by a trio of guitar, violin and flute, and
couples danced together. Later an instrument that originated from
Germany called the Bandoneon was incorporated and it would be this
instrument that would give Tango its characteristic sound that is
recognized around the world today. In its earliest years the Tango was
danced in brothels since its lyrics were considered vulgar. The great
poets of the music Rioplatense( Rio de la Plata) with their lyrics about
unrequited love and about the region that was no longer the same, came
upon the scene in the second decade of the 20th century when
Pascal Contursi wrote ”Mi noche Triste”( My Sad Night) the lamentation
of a man abandoned by his woman. Carlos Gardel recorded this beautiful
tango in 1917 and so was born what later was known as the Tango Song.
No other dance has captured the
imagination of passion and sensuality than the Argentinean Tango.Born in 20th Century
Buenos Aires, the tango is a class on its own. It is a way of life for people who
live and breathe the dance.
“It is a vertical expression of the
horizontal desire”
New gaining worldwide resurgence, the
tango is omni-present in all major continents, such as North and South
America, Europe,Australia and Asia. And the island of Bali takes great
pride with the formation of the first Tango Club in Indonesia, the Tango
Bali Club, founded in June 2005 by Stefani Kanginnadhi.
